For Real Flavor

Food in North Carolina has always been about more than just what's on the plate. It’s how our communities gather, how tradition evolves and how every bite tells a story. Now you can be a part of the story of NC's first MICHELIN Star, seven Bib Gourmand designations and another 39 Recommended restaurants in the brand-new MICHELIN Guide to the American South.

Questions? We've got answers.

The MICHELIN Guide is a globally recognized restaurant rating system that highlights exceptional dining experiences — from casual local favorites to high-end destinations. Created more than a century ago to help travelers find great places to eat, it’s become one of the most trusted names in food. Restaurants are evaluated by anonymous inspectors and can earn distinctions like MICHELIN Stars, Bib Gourmand or Green Stars, each recognizing a different kind of excellence on the plate.

North Carolina’s culinary scene is as diverse as its landscape. From generations-old fish camps to daring new tasting menus, this is a place where food is deeply personal and constantly evolving. It’s no surprise MICHELIN Guide is taking notice — there’s more flavor to uncover around every turn.

MICHELIN Stars award based on the quality of the ingredients used; the mastery of cooking and culinary techniques; the harmony of flavours; the personality of the cuisine as expressed through the dishes; and consistency, both across the entire menu and between visits. Stars are given based solely on what’s on the plate, not the style of the dining room or the type of cuisine. Whether it’s counter service or a white-tablecloth spot, any restaurant can earn a star if the food delivers.

The Bib Gourmand distinction, illustrated with the Michelin Man’s head, was introduced in 1997 to illustrate restaurants offering “exceptionally good food at moderate prices.” Specifically, one can expect to have two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for a reasonable price.

Being MICHELIN Guide Recommended means a restaurant has impressed inspectors with its quality ingredients, solid cooking and overall dining experience. It hasn’t earned a Star or Bib Gourmand, but it’s still a strong endorsement. These spots meet the same high standards used to award other honors, just without the formal distinction. In short: It’s a good meal, done well, and worth your time.
