The rural setting, restrictions on jet skis and swimming, and large mouth bass population make the lake popular for fishermen of all ages. At the public access area, anglers can fish from the bank or fishing pier, or launch their own boats. For cruising on the lake, kayaks and canoes can be rented or bring your own.
Duck hunting opportunities in fall are provided when waterfowl using the Southern flyway pass through Farmer Lake. Day and annual boating passes are available (valid NC fishing and waterfowl hunting licenses required), as are half- and full-day kayak and canoe rentals.
A handicapped-accessible 8-table covered picnic shelter with grills, electricity and water, is situated under a pine tree grove. The picnic shelter is available for half or full day business functions, birthday parties, or other activities.
