Grandfather Mountain has been an icon in North Carolina’s landscape for generations, offering stunning scenery and unmatched ecological diversity. Grandfather Mountain State Park encompasses 2,600 acres of the undeveloped back country on Grandfather Mountain. Located adjacent to the tourist attraction on 5,946-foot Grandfather Mountain, the park offers hikers free access to the peaks via a 12-mile network of alpine trails. Campsites and fire rings are available to campers who backpack in. This state park opens the mountain’s 2,456-acre backcountry to spectacular hiking and backpacking. The park is known for some of the South’s most severe weather and challenging terrain, with trails that have hikers scrambling along cliffs and up ladders.
There are two entry points to the hiking trails in park which do not require paying admission to the adjoining travel attraction.
