The Buffalo Creek Greenway has a paved trail which meanders nearly 3 miles along the Spring Branch to the Neuse River Walk at Smithfield Town Commons then to Buffalo Creek. Part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail through Johnston County, the ten foot wide path accommodates hikers, runners, and bikers.

Trail entrances are located throughout the downtown area and at the back of Smithfield Community Park.

The Town Commons Boat Ramp is available along the greenway at Smithfield Town Commons for canoeing and kayaking. The Smithfield Historic Walking tour brochures are available at the Historic Hastings House and the Johnston County Heritage Center.
