Elk Knob State Park
Elk Knob State Park features one of the highest peaks in North Carolina’s high country at 5,520 feet and one of the park system’s finest trails to the spectacular views from the summit. Despite its location in an area known for winter weather, the park attempts to stay open throughout the winter and is the only one in the system offering cross-country skiing and snowshoeing (although skiers must provide their own equipment). Elk Knob is an outstanding park for experiencing all seasons in the mountain environment.
At lower elevations, there are primitive, backcountry campsites for individuals and for groups.
